Class of the Week: Midshipman

A well-rounded sailor isn't just an inside joke for those who've seen Red the Adventurer; rather it is the description most associated with the Midshipman - this week's Class of the Week.

The Midshipman is a prestige class that is very simple to qualify for, requiring only the basics of sailing, such as balance, climbing and of course using a rope. Despite the simple requirements, the benefits to moving through this career path are immediately apparent.

Midshipman find themselves in advantageous roles on the ship, almost apprentices to the specialists such as Master Gunner, Master of the Tops and Ships Carpenter or even Sailmaker. Midshipman learn a little of each of these trades and can elevate themselves into higher stations as they go. A captain would be wise to have a pair of midshipmen tending the sails during battle, or turning loose a team to handle damage control. During peace-time operations, an experienced midshipman can work wonders in the hold organizing cargo and maximizing space.

But repairs and stacking crates aren't the extent of their abilities. A stout bunch, midshipman are excellent at defending the ship from boarders, often shrugging off damage as they press forth to cut loose grapples. And once their ship is free and clear, they work well under master gunners to run out the guns and fire with precision accuracy and at a higher rate of fire.

The midshipman, in their pursuits of various skills, tends to miss out on the finer details and also on talents that do not concern them for their job. They tend to learn a little slower then other more focused professions, which could hinder them when on dry land.

But when at sea, none are more versatile!
